Thomas Howard Canady, Jr. September 23, 1921 - September 30, 2014 Burke - Thomas Howard Canady, Jr., Colonel (Retired), United States Air Force, of Burke, Virginia, died Tuesday, September 30, one week after his 93rd birthday. He was born in Franklin, Virginia on September 23, 1921 to Marjorie Parker Canady and Thomas Howard Canady. Col. Canady lived in Franklin until 1942, when he enlisted as an aviation cadet and was assigned to the Eighth Air Force, where he was a bomber pilot during World War II. He graduated from the University of Miami, and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War three months after receiving his Masters degree in 1950. Col. Canady accepted a commission in the United States Air Force and was a Military Air Transport Pilot flying throughout the Northern Hemisphere for ten years before being selected as Assistant Air Attach to the United States Embassy, Djakarta, Indonesia. After a tour in Vietnam, he was selected as Air Attach to the United States Embassy, Madrid, Spain. His last assignment, which he held until his retirement in 1978, was Deputy Inspector General of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Col. Canady married the former Dorothya Jean Thomas of Longview, Texas on December 13, 1952 in Coconut Grove, Florida. They had two daughters, Kelsey Lee and Kendall Kay.
