Sumter Deleon Lowry Camp 12 Nov 1926 - 16 Oct 2018 CAMP, SUMTER LOWRY, 91, a longtime resident of Miami Shores, Florida, passed away on October 16, 2018. He was a devoted husband and a gentle and loving father, and he proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Naval Reserve for 29 years. Born in Tampa in 1926 to Vaughan and Willie Louise (Lowry) Camp, Lowry moved to Miami Shores in 1932, attended Miami Shores Elementary School, William Jennings Bryan Junior High School, and Porter Military Academy in Charleston, SC. Upon graduating from high school in 1943, he enlisted m the Army Air Corps and served with the 35th Fighter Squadron in the Pacific fneater andin Japan. After the war, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and served until 1986, retiring with the rank of Captain. After undergraduate studies at the University of Florida and the University of Miami, Lowry returned to Miami Shores, where he met Burr Anderson. They were married in August 1953 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Miami Beach. He completed dental school at Temple University, and the couple came home to Miami Shores, where they raised their children and Lowry established his dental practice. Lowry was an avid outdoorsman -an accomplished wingshooter, big-game hunter and fly fisherman - and he imparted his love of the outdoors to his children. He was also a voracious reader of military history, sporting books, historical fiction and the classics. He presided over a noisy and quarrelsome dinner table with quiet aplomb, enjoyed Big Band music, bourbon, red wine and the Sunday crossword puzzle, adored his wife, always had time for his children and grandchildren, and lived a life of quiet dignity. He practiced dentistry for 44 years and was a life member of the American and Florida Dental Associations, a 60-year member of Rotary International, a fellow with the Florida Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and a life member of the Naval Reserve Association and Reserve Officers Association. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Burr, his brother, Robert, his children, Sumter (SherryJ, Frances (Jay), John (Laura), Mary Heather Vloseph), Richard (Katnryn) and Thomas (Adriane), and 17 grandchildren. A memorial gathering will take place from 11:30-1:30, Saturday, October 20th at the Miami Shores Country Club.
