He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County, a son of the late George Garvey and Myra Forrest Burgess and was predeceased by a daughter, Ellen Burgess Williams. Mr. Burgess was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and Bronco Rod and Gun Club and was retired from Union Camp Corporation after 47 years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years, Margaret Cobb Burgess; two daughters, Susan Grattan and husband, John, of Atlanta, GA and Myra Burgess and husband, Bobby, of Lake Mary, FL; one brother, George Burgess, Jr. of Franklin; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew and Andrew Grattan, Christopher, Amanda and Jennifer Williams and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday, July 13, at Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Roger Crump officiating.
