Jane Elizabeth (Janie) Bradshaw 7 MAY 1892 - 7 JAN 1949 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Woman Killed, Another Hurt By Locomotive One woman was killed instantly and another critically injured about a mile and a half east of Franklin Friday when a west bound Seaboard Air Line train crashed into an automobile at a grade crossing. Mrs. Percy Whitley, 56, of Carrsville, was killed and Mrs. Lizzie B. Turner, reported to have been the driver of the car, was injured. She was taken to Raiford Hospital The accident occurred about 5:15 P. M. as the two drove toward the Norfolk-Franklin Highway (U. S. Route 58) a secondary road. The railroad tracks were between them and the highway. It was reported that a building adjoining the tracks apparently obscured their vision. The engine struck the right side of the car where Mrs. Whitley was sitting. She was pinned beneath the automobile and Mrs. Turner was thrown clear of if, between the tracks of the siding. Mrs. Whitley was the daughter of the late John and Mrs. Rhoda Lanford[Lankford] Bradshaw of Isle of Wight County, and was a member of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church She is survived by her husband, Percy Whitley of Carrsville, and two daughters, Miss Elsie Lee Whitley, who is attending Bob Jones University in Greenville. S. C., and Mrs. I. B. Hall of Charlottesville; three sisters, Mrs. Flora Joyner of Norfolk; Mrs. E. W. Daughtry and Mrs. Charlie Daughtry both of Franklin, and a grand son, Daniel Hall of Charlottesville. Turner, of Carrsville was in Raiford Memorial Hospital in Franklin tonight following an auto-train collision shortly after 5 o’clock Friday night one mile west of Franklin took the life of Mrs. Percy Whitley, 56, also of Carrsville. Mrs. Turner was injured and Mrs. Whitley killed when their 1948 Pontiac was struck at the Seaboard crossing at Route 616 by a west-bound passenger train locomotive. State Trooper W. G. O’Brien raid last night that the car was dragged 30 yards down the track before the engineer could stop. Both women were thrown out of the car, he said. View Said Obstructed It was reported that a building near the track apparently obscured their vision as they drove north toward highway 58. The car was struck on the right front where Mrs. Whitley was sitting.
