HUGH PATRICK BEALE H.P. BEALE, MEAT PACKER AND FARMER DIES UNEXPECTEDLY Hugh Patrick Beale 18 SEP 1874 - 29 NOV 1947 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hugh Patrick Beale, prominent farmer and founder of H.P. Beale & Sons, meat packers, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died suddenly at 6:00 o’clock Saturday morning, November 29, at his home near Courtland. The son of the late Ethedred[] Warren and Sally Barnes Beale, he was born near Newsoms on September 18, 1874. Approximately thirty years ago Mr. Beale started in the meat packing business in a small way. The enterprise has now grown to be one of the largest meat packing establishments in this county. About eighteen years ago he was joined in business by his sons, who will continue in its management. Mr. Beale married Roberta Wellons on January 23, 1908. Surviving him are his widow, three sons, B. Hubert, E. Warren and Fletcher W. Beale, all of Courtland; four daughters, Mrs. C.M. Tomko of Oceana, Mrs. William Bell of Courtland, Mrs. Stanley Rodgers, Jr., and Mrs. Wallace Gwaltney of Suffolk, four grandsons and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a faithful member of Grace Memorial Methodist Church in Sedley, in which he served as Steward for a number of years. Funeral services for Mr. Beale were conducted from the Grace Memorial Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. E.R. Collie, pastor of the church, Rev. Percy D. White of Chatham, former pastor of the Courtland charge, and Rev. Robert M. Kimball, pastor of Johnson’s Grove Christian Church. The active pallbearers were John Beale and Floyd Beale of Franklin, E. Beale Carter of Newsoms, H.V. Thornton and A.M. Howell of Courtland, and S.E. Davis, A.T. Minton and A.L. Matthews of Petersburg. Friends of the family acted as honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin.
