Two of his brothers, Galen E. Barnes of Monticello and Melvin Barnes of Benton Harbor, Michigan, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Robinson of Francesville, left today by train for San Antonio to attend the funeral rites set for Saturday, 7 April 1956, in San Antonio. Burial will take place on Monday in Shrine Cemetery in that city. Mr. Barnes, who was well remembered here, was born on 10 August 1896 in Idaville and was one of a family of nine children of Charles Elmer and Pauline (Renwick) Barnes. He attended the Monticello schools and at one time operated an insurance agency here. He served his country at the Mexican Border in 1916 with Co. C, 3rd Indiana Infantry, and also was a World War I veteran, serving with Battery C, 137th F.A. He was married to Vivian Dobbins, who survives him together with a daughter, Jacqueline Janice Dixon, wife of Capt. R. M. Dixon of the U.S. Army; they are stationed in Hawaii. A watchmaker by trade and jeweler, Mr. Barnes at one time was located in Martinsville before moving to Texas, first to Edinburg and later to Weslaco where he operated his own shop. Later he moved to San Antonio. He was active in service organizations and in the Masonic order and Shrine. Surviving are the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Dixon; and seven brothers and sisters: Galen Barnes of Monticello; Ervin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Keith of Monterey, Calif.; Melvin of Benton Harbor, Mich.; Mrs. Ruth Robinson of Francesville; Mrs. Florence Merchant of Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. Bessie Bowman of Warsaw. A sister, Mrs. Merdith Kilmer, is deceased.
