John Alexander Bailey Jr., 65, died Jan. 13, 2002, in Duluth, Ga. Born Oct. 2, 1916 in Sussex County to the late John Alexander Bailey Sr. and Geneva Babb Bailey, he was a graduate of Courtland High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had retired from the military having served over 22 years of active duty including service in Iceland and Europe with the 5th Engineer Regiment during World War II. His service also included tours in Berlin, Germany, Taiwan and Newfoundland. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Polly A. Bailey; a daughter, Jo Anne Coleman and her husband, Kenneth, of Duluth, Ga.; two sons, Robert Bailey and his wife, Cherie, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Thomas Bailey and his wife, Judy, of McLean, Va.; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Mindy Coleman of Duluth, Ga., Kristina and Brett Bailey of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Kathryn Bailey of McLean, Va.; two sisters, Nancy B. Cogsdale and her husband, Tom, of Sedley, Va., Elizabeth B. Gambill and her husband, Emerson, of Harrisonburg, Va. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
