Obituary of JULIAN PILAND WHITLEY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Wednesday, May 13, 1992 Julian Piland Whitley Sr., 78, a retired captain in the merchant marine, died May 11, 1992, in a hospital. Capt. Whitley was born in Franklin. He had served in the merchant marine during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars and had retired after 38 years. He was a graduate of the U.S. Maritime Service Officers School at Fort Trumbell, New London, Conn. He was a member of International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots; High Street United Methodist Church; and Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his wife, Mamie Scott Whitley; two daughters, Glenda W. Helms and Alice W. Poland, both of Franklin; two sons, Julian Whitley Jr. of Manassas, Va., and Nelson Scott Whitley of Franklin; a sister, Mary W. Hatfield of Franklin; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. John A. Siegle. Friends may join the family at the residence. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
