Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late Roland Lee and Frances Kitchen Whitehead. He was retired from Leggett's Department Store after 40 years of service and was a member of Courtland Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Lee Cutchins Whitehead; a son, Wayne Whitehead and his wife, Terry, of Black Creek; son-in-law, Steve Horne and his wife, Rosemary, of Courtland ; a sister, Dorothy Lee Whitehead of Franklin; five grandchildren, Adam Horne, Eric and Luke Whitehead, Amy Nurney and Steve Brown. He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Horne, and two brothers, Claiborne and Clayton Whitehead. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Speight and the Rev. Greg Kitts officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland .
