Ward COURTLAND - Mildred Scott Ward, 82, widow of Beecher Henry Ward Jr., died May 23, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Henry O'Berry and Flora Yates Scott. Mrs. Ward was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 40 years, was a historian of the church, co-author of church history, and WMU director. She served as president of the Nottoway Rivers Woman's Club and was a charter member of REACT. Survivors include two daughters, Judith W. Wells of Hopewell and Brenda W. Bradshaw of Marietta, S.C.; two sons, Charles H. Ward and James H. Ward of Courtland ; a sister, Jennie Lee Grissom of Courtland ; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Norvelle of Colerain, N.C., and Virginia W. Goodrich of Wakefield. Mrs. Ward was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Futrell; five brothers, William O. Scott, Ralph "Sonny" Scott, Henry O. Scott, Robert Whitehead and Charlie Scott; and a sister-in-law, Louise Britton. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Courtland Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Speight. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery . The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the residence, 22355 Linden St., Courtland , and suggests memorials be made to the Diabetes Association, 6340 Center Drive, York Building, Suite 129, Norfolk, VA 29502 or Relay For Life, c/o Mrs. Nan Grissom, 16030 Wakefield Road, Courtland , VA 23837.
