Obituary of Hermon Douglas Vess HERMAN DOUGLAS VESS Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Saturday, January 1, 2005 Hermon Douglas Vess, 62, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at his residence. Born in Old Fort, N.C., he was a son of the late William Hermon and Mary Esther Watson Vess. A graduate of William and Mary, Mr. Vess was a magistrate for the Fifth Judicial District, a former French teacher at Franklin High School and a member of Sycamore Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Lora E. Vess of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, D. Andrew Vess of Phoenix, Ariz., and Daniel J. Vess and wife, Allison, of Fairfax; one grandson, Parker Vess; two brothers, William Eugene Vess and wife, Lyla, of Hampton and Lloyd M. Vess and wife, Elizabeth, of Lynchburg; five nieces, Teresa Vess, Kimberly Vess, Cheryl Burgess, Susan Allen and Cynthia Wescott; two nephews, David Vess and Michael Vess; and special friends, Ed and Linda Barton; and his loving pet, Sissy. Doug was preceded in death by an infant son, Paul Eric Vess, and a sister and brother-in-law, Lora and Harry Wescott. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Roger Crump and the Rev. Dr. Reginald Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
