Obituary of John Charles Vargo Sr. JOHN CHARLES VARGO SR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, March 6, 1998 John Charles Vargo Sr., 78, died March 4, 1998, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late John Vargo and Mary Malik of Southampton County. He was also the husband of the late Edith Josephine Hasty Vargo of Southampton County. Mr. Vargo was a World War II veteran and honorable member of the U.S. Army serving in the Headquarters and Base Service Squadron 13 Air Service Group stationed in the Western Pacific. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Vargo was retired from Union Camp Corp., Franklin, Va., where he worked as a papermaker for 31 years. He is survived by his wife, Ruby H. Vargo; a daughter, Mary V. O'Neal and her husband, Ronnie, of Rodanthe, N.C.; three sons, John Charles Vargo Jr. and his wife, Gracie, of Franklin, James Arnold Vargo and his wife, Kay, of Boykins, and Thomas Edward Vargo of Courtland ; four stepdaughters, Mary Seal and Carolyn Story of Southampton County, Lena Woodward of Corapeake, N.C., Lona Worley of Sunbury, N.C.; a sister, Florence Sundstrom of Roscoe, N.Y.; a brother, Nick Vargo of Waco, Texas; six grandchildren, John C. Vargo III and Angelia V. Harris of Franklin, Kelly Lynn Vargo of Boykins, John Thomas Vargo and Guy Robert Vargo of Waverly, and Kaleb E. Vargo of Spring Grove; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Vargo and Samantha Vargo of Courtland , and Adam Harris of Franklin. He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie V. Davis of Conway, N.C.; two brothers, Arnold J. Varga of Southampton County and Mike Varga of Portsmouth. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland . The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggests that memorial donations be made to the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 349, Courtland , Va. 23837.
