He was born Sept. 24, 1945 in Franklin and was retired from Apollo Plastics, where he was a foreman. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include his mother, Annie Applewhite Underwood, of Franklin and his sister, Nancy L. Underwood, of Suffolk. He was predeceased by his father, James Thomas Underwood Sr. 

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland , with the Rev. Edward C. Johnson officiating. Memorials may be made to High Street UMC, P.O. Box 218, Franklin, VA 23851. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
