The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - November 29, 1993 Joseph Louis Sykes Jr., age 81, a resident of Newsoms, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1993, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va. Mr. Sykes was the retired owner of Sykes Dry Cleaners in Boykins. He was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church, and the Boykins American Legion Post 0276. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was the son of the late Joseph Louis and Inez W. Sykes. He was brother to the late Mercedes S. Brooks. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy S. Strachan of Bedford, Va., and Beverly S. Briggs of Newsoms and their mother, Charleton Wilhoit Sykes of Newsoms; two sisters, Eloise S. Brooks of Virginia Beach and Inez S. Lassiter of Boykins; one brother, J. David Sykes of Boykins and nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1993 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Pat Tony and the Rev. Kenneth Williams. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, on Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. At other times the family will be at 29091 N. Main St., Newsoms.
