Obituary of Mabel Ball Sumrell MABEL BALL SUMRELL Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, December 4, 2003 Mabel Ball Sumrell, 81, died Dec. 2, 2003, in her home after an extended illness, surrounded by her immediate family and friends. Born Jan. 13, 1922, in Washington, N.C., she was a daughter of the late James Franklin and Emma Spruill Ball and the widow of Guy Sumrell. Mrs. Sumrell was a graduate of the Jefferson School of Commerce, Franklin, Va., and was retired from Southampton Memorial Hospital after 36 years of service. She started at Raiford Memorial Hospital as a switchboard operator and advanced to insurance clerk for Southampton Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of the Professional Business Womens Club and was a Baptist. Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Bulls and husband Sammy of Troy, Va., Betty Edwards of Pendleton, N.C., Brenda Barnes and husband Wayne of Franklin, Cathy Tyree and husband Duane of James- town, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Moore and husband Durwood; and a brother, Arthur Ball and wife Joan, all of Washington, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Michael L. Bulls and wife Chris, Stephen E. Bulls and wife Diana, Dal Edwards, Guy Ed- wards, Jennifer Fowler and husband Joseph, Emory Ed- wards, Deborah Bradshaw and husband Heath and Sandra Tyree; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; special caregivers and friends, Joyce Joyner, Beth Seymour, Ginger LaCasse, Helen Carr, Desiree Long; and Southampton Memorial Hospital Hospice employees. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, James F. Ball Jr. and Horace Ball and a sister, Gladys Hammond. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Terry Smoak and the Rev. Curtis Faison officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park .
