Obituary of Spurgeon Robert Spivey SPURGEON ROBERT SPIVEY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - August 21, 2003 Spurgeon Robert Spivey, 73, retired director of public utilities for the City of Franklin, died Aug. 19, 2003 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Gates County, N.C., he was the son of the late Lowery Jackson and Fannie Stallings Spivey. An Air Force veteran who served in Korea, Mr. Spivey was a member of Franklin Baptist Church for 46 years and a member of the Bruner Bible Class. He was a longtime member of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department and retired in 1988 after 35 years of service with the City of Franklin. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joyce Bryant Spivey; two sons, Bradley Robert Spivey of Franklin and Randall Jackson Spivey of Windsor; two sisters, Lessie Winslow of Maryland and Iris Whitley of Suffolk; two brothers, Edward J. Spivey of Suffolk and Lloyd Spivey of Corapeake, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Spivey, Amanda Spivey, Candice Midyette, Bradley Spivey and Hannah Norris. A son, Douglas Bryan Spivey, predeceased him. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Sharon James officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
