Simmons , passed away Dec. 14, 2005, at his home. Born May 24, 1919, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Simmons . A lifelong farmer, Mr. Simmons served his community in many capacities. He was a member of Sebrell United Methodist Church and served as the chairman of the board of trustees for 45 years. He was also the church secretary and chairman of its finance committee for many years. He was a charter member and first president of the Sebrell Ruritan Club. He was a dedicated chairman of the Sebrell Community Center for 30 years. He was a member of the board of supervisors of Southampton County, a member of the Southampton Memorial Hospital board of directors and a member of the Southampton advisory board of Sovran Bank. Mr. Simmons is survived by his son, Paul W. Simmons and wife Peggy of Sebrell; a grandson, David Paul Simmons and wife Heather; a granddaughter, Kimberly Simmons Pope and husband Mark; two great-granddaughters, Meghan Elizabeth and Madeline Paige Simmons of Courtland; a brother, Wallace Simmons and wife Helen of Franklin; a sister-in-law, Jessie D. Simmons of Courtland; a brother-in-law, Robert W. Brooks of Carson City, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Simmons was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm D. Simmons and a sister, Virginia S. Brooks. The funeral will be conducted at Sebrell United Methodist Church today at 2 p .m. with the Rev. Elizabeth von Trapp Walker. The family will receive friends at his home at 17360 River Road, Sebrell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sebrell United Methodist Church, c/o Glynn Parker, 22031 Rose Hill Drive, Courtland, VA 23837.
