Saunders Jr. FRANKLIN - Charles ``Charlie'' Mahlon Saunders Jr., 76, died Sept. 28, 2001. He was born in Caroline County, June 18, 1925, a son of the late Charles Mahlon Saunders and Annie Landa Saunders. Mr. Saunders graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1950, then moved to Franklin where he was coach of Franklin High School for eight years. He became principal at Courtland Elementary School and while there earned his master's degree from the College of William and Mary in 1964. In the fall of 1964, he organized Brunswick Academy in Lawrenceville, where he remained the headmaster until 1969. In 1969 he finished his career in education by serving as headmaster of Nansemond Suffolk Academy. While actively involved in education, he worked as an independent surveyor for the Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS) for 43 years. He was instrumental in helping farmers in the counties of Southampton, Suffolk, Surry, Dinwiddie, Prince George and Brunswick, to understand all the various programs related to the production of agriculture. Mr. Saunders was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, a member of its Bruner Bible Class, the Hunterdale Ruritan Club, and was a former member of the Franklin Lions Club. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Baird Saunders; two sons, Charles M. Saunders III and wife Nora of Midlothian, Va., and Jeffrey Baird Saunders of Franklin; a daughter, Sherrie Freeman of Crewe, Va.; two brothers, William G. Saunders of Lexington, Va., and Richard L. Saunders of Bowling Green, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael Brandon Saunders, William Mahlon Saunders and Jacob Samuel Freeman. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Sharon E. James and the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins. Burial will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery .
