Obituary of VIRGINIA LEE ROWE The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - Saturday, July 8, 1995 Miss Virginia Lee Rowe, 70, a resident of the 19000 block of River Road in Courtland and the Village at Woods Edge in Franklin, died in Southampton Memorial Hospital on July 7, 1995, after a long illness. Born April 18, 1925, at the family farm in the Sebrell Community where she continued to reside for most of her life, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Eula Clementine Barker Rowe. She enjoyed a special relationship with her aunt and uncle, the late Riddick N. and Hattie Rowe Wells, with whom she and her family shared a home. She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Rowe Kello. She attended Sebrell Elementary School and following graduation from Courtland High School, studied secretarial science under Miss Fannie Webb in Franklin. She was a secretary to the late P.R. Camp until January 1945, when she began employment with what is now the Southampton County Department of Social Services, where she worked until declining health prompted her retirement on April 30, 1985. During this more than 40 years of employment, she was recognized for both her secretarial skills and her dedication to the clients of the agency. She was an active member of Sebrell United Methodist Church where she served as a member of various boards, and as president of the United Methodist Women, of which she was a life member. She taught Sunday school for several decades, beginning as a teenager. The church nursery was refurbished and dedicated in her honor in 1994. She was a charter member and charter president of the Sebrell Woman's Club. She also served as an adult 4-H leader and was a member of the Southampton County Historical Society. She is survived by her brother, Charles B. "Jimmie" Rowe and sister-in-law, Nancy Taylor Rowe, both of Courtland; a sister, Bettie Rowe Hughes and brother-in-law, James E. Hughes, both of Wilson, N.C.; and by seven nieces and nephews, James R. Kello IV, Martha N. Kello and Ashley Brooke Rowe, all of Courtland, William J. Hughes of Roanoke, Katherine Hughes McClure and Tazewell Southgate Rowe of Richmond, and Antoinette Kello Quidley of Manteo, N.C., as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Sebrell United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 9, 1995, at 4 p.m., by the Rev. James M. Smith, Minister, and the Rev. James W. Browder III, Vicar, of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Courtland. Interment will follow in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.
