Obituary of John Edwin Ray 3rd VIRGINIA BEACH - John Edwin Ray 3^(rd) was born in 1919 in Franklin Va., He was educated at Franklin schools, Woodberry Forest School and Cornell University. He served in the Army Air Corps in the European theatre during World War II. He completed 99 combat missions and ended his service with the rank of major. He spent his career working first at Camp Manufacturing Company and then at Union Camp Corporation. He had a lifelong commitment of philanthropy, particularly in support of education. He played a key role in founding The Darden Graduate School of Business of the University of Virginia and he was a longtime trustee of Woodberry Forest School. He is survived by his most beloved wife, Margaret Smith Ray; his brother, Robert Camp Ray; his children, Margaret Shepherd Ray, John Burton Ray and Caroline Ray Hovey; his grandchildren, Margaret Ellis Foley, Charles Lindsay Gibbs II, Najha Ray, Margot Shepherd Ray, Eliza Russell Brown and Katherine Hubbard Brown; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 11:30 a.m. by the Rev. Richard Childress at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.
