Mr. Rainey was a native of Southampton County and was the son of the late John E. and Arlene Roberts Rainey. He was a Navy veteran and a Protestant. He had retired as a digester operator in the pulp mill department of Union Camp Corp. after 43 years with the company. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Johnson Rainey; one daughter, Cindy R. Thomason; one son, Steve T. Rainey, all of Franklin; one sister, Eunice R. Ashe of Hampton; three grandchildren, Shelly G. Thomason, Beau H. Thomason and Justin T. Rainey. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park . The family will receive friends at the residence and suggest memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
