SUFFOLK  James Jethro Powell, Sr., 86, of W. Liberty Spring Road, passed away April 2,  2001, at Louise Obici Hospital.

  He was born the son of the late Jethro Smith Powell and Mary Duke Powell. Mr. Powell, a retired farmer, was born in Suffolk and was a lifelong member of Liberty Spring Christian Church.
  He is survived by his wife, Marjorie H. Powell; daughter, Jean P. Jeffries and husband, William, of Quinton, Va.; son, James J. Powell, Jr. and wife, Sue, of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Howard S. Jeffries of Elm City, N.C., Gloria Jeffries Jay of Richmond, Cindy Powell Reid of Suffolk; two great-grandsons, Gregg and Winston Jeffires; sister, Elizabeth Powell Byrd of Richmond.
  A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Sallye A. Hardy and the Rev. Tommy Reynolds officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of Flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad or Liberty Spring Christian Church.
