Red, a 1980 graduate of Franklin High School, was a member and hunt master of 6-12 Hunt Club and a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church. Survivors include his parents, Russell Lee Powell Sr. and Emily Winslow Powell of Franklin; two sisters, Wanda P. Bennett and husband Kelly of Evergreen, N.C. and Wendy P. Mitchell and husband Michael of Portsmouth; a brother, Russell L. Powell Jr. of Franklin; two nieces, Rebecca and Sarah Mitchell; three nephews, Christopher and Daniel Bennett and Joshua Mitchell; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a special friend, Lisa Turner of Franklin. A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland , by the Rev. Mike Harrell. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home and suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 55, Franklin, VA 23851.
