A Navy veteran of World War II, he retired from the Roll Finishing Department of Union Camp Corporation in 1985 and, if he wasn't at work, he was at home with family or working in the garden. An avid fisherman and gardener, he loved to watch college football. He attended Courtland Baptist Church.
