Obituary of Herman Wilson Overby HERMAN WILSON OVERBY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - February 9, 1999 Herman Wilson ''Kyser'' Overby, 72, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, Va., died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at his home. Born Dec. 11, 1926, near Branchville, he was the son of the late Robert C. and Nellie Beale Overby. He was a member of the Branchville United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and part of the Allied occupation forces in Germany following the war. He was co-owner along with his brother, Alton, of Branchville Machinery Co. and Overby Motor Co. until his retirement in 1988 after 41 years of service. He was a founding member of Branchville Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of the Branchville Ruritan Club. He was also vice president of the Branchville Community Center and was a member of American Legion Post No. 276, Boykins. He had formerly served on the Branchville Town Council. He is survived by his wife, Amanda Miller Overby; two sons, Herman W. Overby Jr. of Chesterfield and Milton Ray Overby of Drewryville; daughter-in-law, Jane Martin Overby of Chester; two grandsons, Russell Leigh Overby and Christopher Ryan Overby; one granddaughter, Kristen Nichole Phelps; three brothers, Alton Overby of Boykins, Larry Overby of Franklin and Linwood Overby of Raleigh, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Kayre Harrup and her husband, Robert Harrup Jr., of Chesapeake and Nancy Barrett and her husband, Glenn Barrett, of Branchville; a stepson, Franklin W. Phelps Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Branchville; his former wife, Ella Jean Overby of Branchville; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of good friends and neighbors including brother-in-law Clay W. Beasley of Branchville. He was predeceased by three sisters, Reba Beasley, Eva Beale and Virginia House; and four brothers, Colis Overby, Russell Overby, Rudolph ''Bug'' Overby and Clinton ''Jake'' Overby. The Rev. L. Raymond McGarr will hold funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Boykins. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.
