Obituary of Helen Shryer Munford HELEN SHRYER MUNFORD Daily Press 1 July 2003 p C5 (Newport News, Va) ZUNI - Helen Shryer Munford, 82, a resident of Zuni, Va., went home to be with the Lord on the Lord's Day, June 29, 2003. Helen and her twin sister Dorothy Shryer Moore were born Dec. 29, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late John R. Shryer and Mary Tucker Shryer (Dee). "Miss Helen," as she was affectionately known, was a loving Christian wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister and aunt. As a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, she taught the 3, 4 and 5 year olds in Sunday School for 41 years and she also led the Sunbeams and Mission Friends for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of Ruth Sunday School Class, Young at Heart and the Peanut City Pacesetters. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ethel Jones Shryer, and a niece, Kathleen Umphlette Lewison. "Miss Helen" is survived by her loving husband and special caregiver of 62 years, Ben Munford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay M. and Bobby Fowler of Sedley, Va., and Brenda M. and Ed Phillips of Zuni, Va.; two granddaughters, Suzanne Kay Phillips of Richmond, Va., and Stephanie Karen Phillips of Zuni, Va.; her twin sister, Dorothy S. Moore of Lanexa, Va.; a cousin, John Ronan of Syracuse, N.Y.; two nieces, Joyce U. Neighbours and husband, Marion, of Windsor, Va., and Sharon U. Case and husband, Dan, of Little Rock, Ark.; two nephews, Michael Barnes and wife, Maggie, of Lanexa, Va., and Rodney Barnes and wife, Charlotte, of Florida; and numerous great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her extended family, Joleen N. and Savannah Miller of Suffolk, Va., and Sid Neighbours of Portsmouth, Va., Judy and Wayne Hedgepeth of Zuni, Va., Johnny and Diana Cook of Gloucester, Va.; and the Eugene Helmey family of Savannah, Ga. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, in Tucker Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Bradshaw and the Rev. Micah Voight with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 7132 Ecella Road, Zuni, Va.
