James Herbert Lawrence Sr., 97, of North Court St., died June 21, 1999. 

Mr. Lawrence was born in Portsmouth to the late Joshua Frank and Kate Rae Lawrence. He was a retired salesman from Buryn Old & Eaton Hardware Co. and Windsor Supply. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church, L.T. Hall Bible Class and Windsor Ruritan Club. 

The widower of Margaret Darden Lawrence, he was also predeceased by a daughter, Katie L. Graves and a son, James Herbert Lawrence Jr. Survivors include two sisters, Catherine L. Nelms of Suffolk and Margaret L. Grayson of Blacksburg, Va.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. 

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Windsor Cemetery by the Rev. Tony Johnson. Visitation will follow at the residence. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Windsor Baptist Church, P.O. Box 498, Windsor VA 23487.
