Herbert Odell Joyner, 82, died Aug. 5, 2002 in Courtland Healthcare Center. 

A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was one of six children of the late Herbert L. and Quintilla Vick Joyner. A retired farmer, he was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, Sebrill Civic Center and Manry Hunt Club. 

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Frances Grubbs Joyner; one daughter, Julia Joyner Gray and her husband Franklin of Courtland ; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Joyner was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn Joyner Foust. 

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland , with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggests memorials be made to Courtland Baptist Church, 22264 Main St., Courtland , VA 23837, or Courtland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 439, Courtland , VA 23837.
