Obituary of Virgie Holland Piland Johnson VIRGIE HOLLAND PILAND JOHNSON Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 18, 2003 Virgie Holland Piland Johnson, 88, of Richmond, formerly of Franklin, passed away Dec. 16, 2003. She was a daughter of the late Sarah Holland and George Alexander Piland and the widow of W. Delbroe Johnson Sr. She was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters. Virgie was formerly an active member of Franklin Baptist Church, High Street Senior Citizens, a Cub Scout den mother for 13 years, a member of the Southampton County Historical Society and later became a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Richmond. An avid grower of roses, she was known as "The Rose Lady" at the East Pavillion where she shared many roses over the years. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah J. Waters and husband Elwood; three sons, William D. Johnson Jr. and wife Pat, Thomas Piland Johnson and wife Cindy and David Keith Johnson and wife Linda; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Franklin Baptist Church, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
