Mrs. Jernigan, a native of Norfolk, was the widow of Elmo G. Jernigan Sr. She was retired as chief telephone operator from the Naval Hospital after 20 years. She was a member of Simonsdale Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth; Miriam Chapter (NU)94, Order of Eastern Star; Telephone Pioneers of America; and Western Branch Senior Citizens Club Survivors include one son, Elmo G. Jernigan Jr., and his wife, Mary Ellen of Chesapeake; one sister, Alva Parker of Norfolk; two brothers, John Ivey and Frank R. Ivey, both of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Constance Lynn Gibbs, Sandra Ellen Pieroni and Jennifer Leigh Christmas; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, with Eastern Star rites, by Dr. Melvin S. Hester and the Rev. Ernest Myers. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
