sObituary of Robert Cobb Howell ROBERT COBB HOWELL Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 1, 2003 Robert Cobb Howell, 79, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Herman Howell Sr. and Carrie Cobb Howell, both of Franklin. He was a lifelong member of Franklin Baptist Church and an active member of the Brunner Bible Class. Early jobs included employment with the Virginia State Highway Department, Surveying Division and working at the Howell family Esso station at Four Brothers (Howells Corner) prior to serving his country in World War II. He was a proud member of Company B, 51st Infantry, U.S. Army. While serving in France, he was seriously injured on July 20, 1944. Honors he received included the European African Mid-Eastern Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Battle Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. After a lengthy recovery from his battle wounds, he joined his father in the family farm operation where he remained until his retirement. Survivors include a halfbrother, William Herman Howell Jr. and his wife, Helen R. Howell, of Franklin; two nephews, William "Bill" H. Howell III and his wife, Jackie S. Howell, of Franklin, John F. Howell and his wife, Wendy W. Howell of Hawaii; a niece, Janet R. Howell of Richmond; two great-nieces, Susan H. Suiter and Samantha M.L. Howell; two great-nephews, W. Stewart Howell and J. Michael Howell; four great-great-nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Richard Childress and the Rev. Sharon James officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery . The family will receive visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, and other times at the home of Helen and William Howell, 26374 Howell Corner.
