   SUFFOLK - Thurman Rawls Hayes, born July 6, 1924, went to be with the Lord on May 5, 2002.
   He was born in Suffolk and was the son of the late Jacob Thomas Hayes and Emma Horton Hayes Raby. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He loved his Lord, his family and his church.
   He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elsie Wilkins Hayes; sister, Martha Leona Luke; daughter, Jennifer Hayes Ward and her husband, Ronnie; son, Thurman R. Hayes, Jr. and his wife, Melissa; and grandchildren, Jessica and Brandon Ward, Caleb, Courtney and Cassidy Hayes.
   A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church by his son, Dr. Thurman Hayes Jr., and his pastor, Dr. David Chauncey. Burial will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 237 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434.
