Joseph Alvin Hatfield, 87, died Aug. 8, 1999, at the East Pavilion. 

Born June 16, 1912, Mr. Hatfield was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and a son of the late James Edward and Bertha Council Hatfield. An Army veteran of WWII, he retired from Union Camp Corp. and as a farmer. He was a lifetime member of Black Creek Baptist Church and a member of Black Creek Burdette Ruritan Club. 

He is survived by a sister, Vaughan H. Bradshaw and sister-in-law Eunice F. Hatfield, both of Franklin; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alta H. Vaughan and brother, James E. Hatfield Jr. 

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Willis Switzer and the Rev. Wayne Underwood officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 18120 Line Pine Road. 

Memorials may be made to the Black Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 34163 Vicksville Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
