He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and was a service mechanic with Franklin Equipment Sales and Service. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Whitley Griffin; his mother, Gladys Bryant Whalin of Franklin; a daughter, Donna J. Baker and her husband, Joe, of Hobgood, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Tina Spivey of Boykins and Lisa Whitfield and her husband, Melvin, of Suffolk; a stepson, Raymond P. Gay and his wife, Nickie, of Como, N.C.; a sister, Joyce G. Ricks and her husband, Mac, of Pendleton, N.C.; six stepgrandchildren, Brian Gay, Candice Midyette, Bradley Spivey, Sharon Gay, Shannon Gay and Robert Whitfield; a niece, Robin Byrd and her husband, Charles and son Joshua of Murfreesboro; and special aunts. He was predeceased by his father, Johnnie Griffin. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. J.R. Hughes and the Rev. Howard Vinson officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park .
