Obituary of Raymond Saunders Gordon RAYMOND SAUNDERS GORDON Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, May 30, 2004 RAYMOND S. GORDON Raymond Saunders Gordon, 75, of Charlotte, N.C., died May 29, 2004. He was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Suffolk, (Nansemond County), son of the late Ray F. and Marion Saunders Gordon. Mr. Gordon graduated from Suffolk High School, Class of 1945, and from Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1949B, in Civil Engineering. He served in the Korean War as 1st lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers. He then received a masters degree at Purdue University in Civil Engineering. His career in engineering was with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and the Virginia Highway Department before joining the Portland Cement Association, where he was regional paving director in the State of Virginia, in the Southeast area based in Atlanta, in the Southwest area based in Dallas, in the State of Florida, and the New England and Central Atlantic areas based in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the American Civil Engineers Society. The most recent years were spent in retirement, three in Florida and 12 in Charlotte, N.C. He will be remembered as "always the gentleman" and his love of family, yard, Big Band music, scouting, football, fishing, coast, dogs and horses. Survivors include a daughter, Diann B. Gordon; a son, Robert T. Gordon, both of Gloucester Point, Va.; a sister, Faye Gordon Humphrey and her husband, James E. Humphrey of Charlotte, N.C.; along with nephews, John G. and Mark E. Humphrey; nieces, Carolyn F. Humphrey and Marion H. Hinkle, their spouses and children; six grandnieces, Jenna, Julia, Ana, Mia, Olivia and Leah Ray; and cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Association of Mecklenburg County or Hospice at Charlotte, 1401 or 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204, in his memory. The family will receive friends at the R.W. Baker & Co.
