Lawrence Earl Gardner Jr., 71, died Jan. 16, 2001, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Gardner was the widower of Grace ``Brad'' Bradshaw Gardner and was a retired paper maker with Union Camp Corporation. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a life- time member of both Community Hunt Club and Carrsville Hunt Club. 

Survivors include two sons, L Lawrence E. ``Larry'' Gardner and his wife, Gwen, and Robert M. ``Bob'' Gardner; stepmother, Myrtle Winslow Gardner; half brother, Earl Randy Gardner, all of Carrsville; half sister, Shelby Jean Woodyard of Suffolk; and a grandchild, Lisa Marie Gardner. 

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Richard Peerey officiating. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and suggests that memorials be made to a favorite charity.
