He was born in Suffolk March 23, 1958, to Doris Umphlett and the late Johnnie O. Gardner. Mr. Gardner was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and owner and operator of Gardner Automotive Center in Suffolk for 18 years. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Mercer Gardner of 26 years; two sons, Stephen and Darren Gardner; his mother, Doris Gardner, all of Suffolk; a sister, Deborah A. Manning of Morehead City, N.C.; and many special friends. A funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Wilroy Baptist Church, where Johnny and Darlene were married June 2, 1979, by Pastor Dallas Bumgarner and Deacon Tim Rawls. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.
