Obituary of Henry Howell Gardner HENRY HOWELL GARDNER Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, October 6, 2003 Henry Howell Gardner, 88, loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in a Richmond hospital. Born May 16, 1915 in Nansemond County and a lifelong resident of Franklin, he was the son of the late Henry Grady and Bessie Howell Gardner. He was a cadet at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a World War II veteran who served with the 62nd Troop Carrier Squadron. Mr. Gardner was a member of Hunterdale United Church of Christ, the American Legion Post 73, and the U.S. Army Air Force Yacht Club (fraternity). He was a retired instrument mechanic at Union Camp Corporation and a farmer. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Elaine Howell Gardner; two daughters, Sheila G. Smith and husband Ken of Richmond, Linda G. Smart and husband Larry of Berea, Ky.; a sister, Myrtle G. Eason of Suffolk; nine grandchildren, Wes Rainey and wife Denise of Newport News, Heather Worsham and husband Mark of Allentown, Pa., Shannon Garst and husband Chris of Richmond, Natalie Lewis and husband Brad of Berea, Allison Smith and husband Terry of Springfield, Mo., Anna Sobczak and husband Eric of Morehead City, N.C., Kimberly Singleton and husband Andrew of Orlando, Fla., Janet Postlewaite and husband Jeff of Virginia Beach, and Sarah Smart of Berea; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah Worsham, Benjamin Worsham, Emily Worsham, Christian Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Evan Sobczak and Peyton Garst; and many beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Home Chapel, Franklin, with the Rev. Dietmar Plajer and the Rev. Glen Johnson officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Southampton Memorial Park .
