   SMITHFIELD - Vaughan D. Fowler, 67, of the 1000 block of Preston Road near Smithfield, died July 17, 1998.
   Born in Franklin, Va., on March 27, 1931, he was the son of Hortense Saunders Fowler and the late Joseph Q. Fowler. He was the retired principal of Woodington Middle School in Lenoir County, N.C.
   Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife, Marie Daughtry Fowler; two sons, Steven Fowler of Pink Hill and Joseph Fowler of Oxford; a daughter, Kathy Rion of Loris, S.C.; two step-sons, Wayne Mitchell and Woody Mitchell, both of Princeton; and six grandchildren.
   A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma, N.C.  Burial with graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
