FINLEY Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - February 27, 1999 Ethel Rowe Kirkland Finley, 88, of Clay Street, died Feb. 26, 1999, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Finley was born Dec. 8, 1910, in the Story Station area of Southampton County and was a daughter of the late George Cuthbert and Lucy Rowe Kirkland. She graduated from Courtland High School in 1927 and Farmville State Teacher's College (Longwood) in 1931. After college, she taught mathematics and science at Ivor High School from 1933-1944 and Franklin High School from 1967-1968. Mrs. Finley was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, where she attended the Story Bible Class. She also frequently attended Franklin Baptist Church and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, J.J. ``Jay'' Finley Jr.; two sons, William K. Finley of Greensboro, N.C., and J.J. Finley III and his wife, Frances, of Waldorf, Md.; and two grandchildren, J.J. ``Jess'' Finley IV and Darby Elizabeth Finley. She was predeceased by two sisters, Grace K. Pond and Flossie K. Priggen. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Courtland Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Speight, the Rev. Edmund Pickup and the Rev. Dr. Ira Hudgins. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
