Obituary of Martha Galtress Duke MARTHA GALTRESS DUKE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 28, 2003 Martha G. Duke IVOR - Martha Galtress Duke, 94, lifelong resident of Southampton County, passed away Jan. 27, 2003 at Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. Born Jan. 3, 1909, she was the widow of Marvin Lemuel Duke Sr. and the daughter of the late W.R. Galtress and Tena Raiford Galtress. Mrs. Duke retired from Ivor Elementary School after many years of service. She was a member of Ivor Baptist Church and was awarded the Home Missionary of the Year in 1992. She was also a member of the Ivor Senior Citizens Club and served on the Ladies Auxiliary for the Ivor Rescue Squad. Mrs. Duke was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn D. Gregory; two sisters, Betty G. Adams and Mable Arrington; and a brother, R. Alton Galtress. Mrs. Duke is survived by a daughter, Barbara D. Gilliland of Woodbridge, Va.; two sons, Marvin Lemuel Duke Jr. and wife Huntus of Dinwiddie and Winston C. Duke and wife JoAnne of Richmond; three sisters, Dorothy G. Denson of Suffolk, Jean G. Vaughan of Franklin and Lillian B. Travis of Wakefield; two brothers, Thomas Galtress of Franklin and George H. Galtress of Carrsville; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Interment will follow in Ivor Cemetery . Family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Ivor Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
