Obituary of GENIE DRAKE Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 22, 1996 Mr. Genie Drake, 85, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, in Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Johnny and Betty Drake. A lifelong resident of Southampton County, Mr. Drake was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, retiring as foreman in 1973 after 32 years of service. Following his retirement, he owned and operated Drake and Drake Grocery in Newsoms . He was a member of Newsoms Baptist church, Newsoms Ruritan Club and Newsoms Hunt Club. Mr. Drake is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary B. "Lizzie" Drake; two sons, George T. Drake Sr. of Newsoms and Curtis W. Drake of Franklin; two daughters, Marion D. Poole and Loretta D. Faison, both of Franklin; a brother, Dock V. Drake of Colosee; and seven grandchildren, George T. Drake Jr., Richard A. Poole, Melody F. Tayloe, Beth P. Drake, Pamela F. Story, Lisa D. Skeeters and Shara F. Pearce; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Newsoms Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery , Newsoms . Friends may call at the General Thomas Highway residence. Donations may be made to Newsoms Baptist Church.
