Born in Sandy Cross, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Rubin Wayward and Iola Russell Nixon. Mrs. Drake was a former employee of Vaughan and Company Bank and was a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church where she was past president of the WMU. She was a former member of the Southampton County Historical Society and the Walter Cecil Rawls Library Board. Survivors include her husband, Walter Franklin Drake Sr.; two daughters, Debra D. Mullican and husband, Jack of Savannah, Ga., Sandra D. Barnes and husband, Mitcheal, of Sunbeam; a son, Walter F. Drake Jr. and wife, Beth, of Sunbeam; a brother, Rubin W. "Nick" Nixon Jr. and wife, Helen of Courtland; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Mullican, Justin Barnes, Jessica Barnes, Matthew Drake, Jason Drake, Crystal Drake and Travis Holland. She was predeceased by two brothers, Leon and Phillip Nixon. A funeral will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Sunbeam Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Williams and the Rev. Willis Switzer officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery .
