Obituary of DR. JAMES L. CAMP, III DONATED OBIT – DIED. 06-21-1994 (donated) CHARLOTTESVILLE – Dr. James L. Camp, III, 73, of Charlottesville died Tuesday morning, June 21, in his sleep at the summer residence at Virginia Beach. He was the widower of Jane G. Camp and is survived by two sons, James L. Camp, IV and Christopher P. Camp, and two grandchildren, Anne M. Camp and Christopher Camp, Jr. Dr. Camp was a member of the J.L. Camp family long prominent in the wood products business headquartered in Franklin, Va. Dr. Camp had retired as director of the Student Health Department at the University of Virginia after almost 25 years. The regard with which Dr. Camp was held was demonstrated by the many awards conferred upon him by the school and its student body including ODR, Raven IMP, and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award. Students excused from examinations by medical certificate were said to be "camping out." Dr. Camp graduated from Woodberry Forest School in 1938 from which he had recently received the Distinguished Service Award. He received a B.A. degree from the University of Virginia in 1942 and his medical degree in 1944 following which he served a fellowship in cardiology in London under Lord John Butterfield. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Medical Corps in World War II. Dr. Camp was active in business, civic and cultural affairs serving on numerous boards in each of those fields. Funeral services will be held at the University Chapel in Charlottesville at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25. Parking will be available on McCormick Road. H.D.
