Mabel Holland Demarest , 97, a native of Holland, Va., died July 9, 1993, in her home. 
Mrs. Demarest was the daughter of the late Solomon W. and Sallie Edwards Holland and was the widow of J. Howard Demarest . She was a graduate of Mary Washington College and a former teacher in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties and in Draper, N.C. She was very active along with her husband in United Service Organization (USO) work in Vallio, California, Panama, Guam and Alaska. 
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Jack G. and Rheba Holland of the Village at Woods Edge in Franklin, Va.; and another sister-in-law, Irene Goldbeck of Connecticut. Other survivors include numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. 
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by Dr. Ira D. Hudgins. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private. 
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to a favorite charity.
