Obituary of Maxie Rice Day Sr. MAXIE R. DAY SR. Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - September 14, 2003 Maxie Rice Day Sr., 86, owner of Whitley Hardware in Franklin for 30 years, died Sept. 13, 2003, in Midlothian, Va. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late Frank Relph and Lucy Tomlin Day, and the widower of Edith Whitley Day. A 1935 graduate of Franklin High School, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 151 AF&AM, Portsmouth Scottish Rites and a member of Khedive Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Virginia Hardware Association, a charter member of the Franklin Jaycees, the Franklin Lions Club and a member of Cypress Cove Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. Maxie was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, where he was a former superintendent of Sunday school. Survivors include two daughters, Maxine D. Hollowell and husband Fred of Franklin, and Susan D. Delk and husband Bill of Midlothian; two sons, M. Rice Day Jr. and wife Vashti of Stony Creek, N.C., and L. Whitley Day and wife Courtney of Midlothian; one sister, Lucy D. Beale of Franklin; one brother, J. Spurgeon Day of Warsaw; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank R. Day Jr. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda Alvis officiating. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and requests that memorials be made to High Street United Methodist Church, P.O.
