Obituary of Joseph Leroy Dail JOSEPH LEROY DAIL Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - March 11, 2003 J. Leroy Dail NEWSOMS - Joseph Leroy "Coach" Dail, 99, died March 10, 2003. Born in Edenton, N.C., he was a son of the late Joseph Cooper and Kate Hobbs Dail and was the widower of Annie Maude Worrell Dail. Coach Dail was a 1925 graduate of Wake Forest College and was a teacher, principal and coach for 46 years. He coached men's baseball and basketball and women's softball and basketball. His record over 46 seasons was 513 wins and only 56 losses. He loved and cared for his students and athletes. For his dedicated service to the community of Newsoms , a new baseball field was dedicated in his name in 1985. He was part owner and operator of a service station for 15 years and a member of the Southampton County Drug Focus Committee for seven years. Mr. Dail was a charter member and past president of the Newsoms Ruritan Club and served for 66 years. He was Newsoms vice-mayor for 10 years and town clerk for 17 years. Mr. Dail was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church and its Men's Bible Class teacher for 66 years and a deacon and choir member for over 60 years. Survivors include his son, Joseph L. Dail Jr. and his wife, Lannie, of Franklin; two grandchildren, Deanna Larion and Mike Dail; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Larion and Victoria Dail; a sister, Katie Dickson of Frederick, Md.; and a brother, Nathan Dail of Edenton. Mr. Dail was predeceased by two sisters, Eugenia Shump and Iva Mae Dail. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hollywood Cemetery , Newsoms , with the Rev. Curtis Faison officiating. The family will receive friends today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Joe and Lannie, 317 B Clay Court, Franklin.
