Obituary of Ernest Charles Cutchins ERNEST CHARLES CUTCHINS Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, January 29, 2006 WASHINGTON - Ernest Charles Cutchins of Washington, D.C., died Jan. 16, 2006, at Lake Prince Woods Center in Suffolk. Dr. Cutchins was born Aug. 19, 1922, to the late Ernest Lee and Bernice Newton Cutchins of Newsoms, Va. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943 and entered the U.S. Army serving in Italy during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he taught science at Newsoms High School in Newsoms, Va., and Anacostia High School in Washington, D.C. He received his master of science in 1951 and doctor of philosophy in 1955 from University of Maryland. From 1951-1953, he served in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army in Korea and Japan. He held professional staff scientist positions at the Walter Reed Institute of Medical Research, the National Institutes of Health and the Charles Pfizer Company where he worked on the measles vaccine. Dr. Cutchins joined the faculty at Catholic University of America as an associate professor in 1961 and received tenure in 1971. He served as the chair of the biology department from 1977-1986. He retired from the faculty in August 1987. He held memberships in the American Association of Immunologists, American Society for Microbiology, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi Honor Societies. An extensive traveler, he visited more than 43 countries in his lifetime. He was predeceased by his brother, J.W. Cutchins ; a nephew, Zachary Cutchins ; and special friend, J.W. Patterson. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Marguerite S. Cutchins ; close friends, Theresa Sousa and Eileen Scanlon; nephews and nieces, Kevin and Rosalind Cutchins , Beverly and Mike Van Staten, Don and Tammy Cutchins , Kelsey, Lindsay, Jack, Lexie and Nicholas.
