Obituary of Clifford Armstrong Cutchins III CLIFFORD A. CUTCHINS III Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 27, 2002 Clifford Armstrong Cutchins III, 79, died Dec. 24, 2002. A native of Southampton County, Va., he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and returned to Franklin, Va., where he began a long and distinguished career in banking. He served as chairman and chief executive officer of Sovran Financial Corporation, now part of Bank of America. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Woods Cutchins; and three sons, Clifford Armstrong Cutchins IV and his wife Jane, William Witherspoon Cutchins and his wife Caroline of Richmond and Cecil Vaughan Cutchins and his wife Anne of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by two sisters, Keith Cutchins DeMoss of Nashville, Tenn., and Katherine Cutchins Billingham of Syracuse, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren, Sarah Cutchins Ewing, Ann Woods Cutchins, William Witherspoon Cutchins, Caroline Davidson Cutchins, Elizabeth Matthews Cutchins, Cecil Vaughan Cutchins Jr., Allison Armstrong Cutchins and Clifford A. Cutchins V. Mr. Cutchins had a long history of civic involvement in many state and local organizations. He was an Eagle Scout, the recipient of the First Citizen of Norfolk Award in 1990, served as rector of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and in 1995, was awarded by Virginia Tech the William H. Ruffner Medal for outstanding service. He was an avid farmer and hunter in addition to his interest in banking. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, Va., by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach located at 36th Street and Pacific Avenue by Dr. Dwight O. Christenbury.
