Ernest Jacob Cogsdale, 96, died Sept. 15, 1998. Born in Gates County, N.C., he was a son of the late J.C. and Catherine Cogsdale. He was a retired merchant and farmer and a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church. 

Mr. Cogsdale is survived by a sister-in-law, Virginia P. Wyatt of Chesapeake; two nephews, Donald Wyatt of Chesapeake, Robert M. Hayes of Virginia Beach; and several cousins. 

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Newsoms United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Langley and the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery . Memorial donations may be made to the Newsoms United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 235, Newsoms , Va. 23874. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge of arrangements.
